“The Most Overlooked ‘Mother’ in the Bible” (Judy Gerry)

Every year on Mother’s Day I think about the examples of moms in the Bible.  Awhile back I encountered  what is probably ‘the MOST OVER-LOOKED MOTHER’ in the Bible.  She’s only talked about in the Palm Sunday story as recorded in Matthew 21:1-11.

Yes, you’ve got it …. it’s the mother of the colt that Jesus sat upon when He entered Jerusalem that day.  Matthew tells us that when Jesus’ disciples went to get the colt on which Jesus would ride, the donkey was also brought along with her colt.  Apparently, she walked along with her little one that day.  I was struck by the fact that the donkey was able to witness her own colt serving the King and lifting Him high on that Palm Sunday!

I’d never thought of myself in terms of being a ‘mother donkey’ (!), but Matthew’s account struck me when I read it.  As weird as it sounds, I identify with this mother donkey.  More than anything, as a mom…

• I pray that my children will be servants of the Most High God.
• I pray that they will gently, quickly and gladly carry any burden placed on them to the glory of God.
• I ask the Lord continually that our five children would be used to by Jesus to usher in “He who comes in the name of the LORD.”
• And I pray that every member of our growing family will be like that baby colt – lifting Jesus high for all to see.

• On this Mother’s Day, I’m also asking the Lord to let me be like the example of that ‘mother donkey.’  I pray that I will have her same humble attitude; quietly serving unnoticed in the background.  And I pray that I will quickly respond with enthusiastic gentleness when the Master calls any from our family to serve Him in any way.

Oh what a grand reward it is to see our children – who are a gift from God Himself – being used by Him.   That is the best ‘Mother’s Day’ gift that I could ever desire.
