About Biblical Love

Some friends were over last night for a Valentine’s celebration and we feasted on a potato bar (baked potato with about 10 choices of toppings) and the Word. What a great evening! Our culture seems to claim to have the market on what love is… in movies, magazines, tv, etc. But we studied 1 Corinthians 13– what constitutes “true love.” Here are some nuggets we came away with.

Verse 8 says, “Love Never Fails.” There is only one person that can claim this– God himself. His standard is high!

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

How are we doing in each of these areas? We discovered that we came up pretty short. Our desire should be to emulate Him in all of them. As we grow in him, He forgives us through Christ and will give us the ability to follow him more closely.

Love is sacrificial. It is never motivated by self-centered desires.

The verse which concludes the “love passage,” –”And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” When we meet God face to face, we will perfect intimacy with Him and will therefore not need faith and hope as they will be completely fulfilled. But love will remain… for God is Love!

May you know this kind of love this Valentine’s season!

how to avoid a broken heart…but the cost it brings (Seth Kniep)

C. S. Lewis wrote in his book The Four Loves, “Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give your heart to no one. It will not be broken, it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The only place outside of heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all dangers and perturbations of love, is hell.”
